Der ursprüngliche Titel «Simon und Helena» (siehe MB-Liste und erste Tagebucheintragungen) verweist auf die gnostische Legende, wonach Simon Magus die junge Helena, die als Reinkarnation der trojanischen Helena galt, mit sich führte. (Bei Flaubert erscheint das ungleiche Paar dem Antonius. Tentation de Saint Antoine, Paris 1891, S. 133 ff; siehe auch Tagebuch 15.Februar 1948 und Bemerkung zu Nr.439.)
Eine lavierte Federzeichnung, zirka 50:29 cm, datiert 2.1.46 A, ist dem Gemälde thematisch und im Aufbau verwandt, das Gemälde hat etwa die Proportionen der Zeichnung (Abb. bei Fischer I; die Zeichnung wurde vor 1950 von Curt Valentin an Samuel Magdoff, Bryn Mawr, Pa., verkauft. Ein Zusammenhang mit dem zwei Jahre später entstandenen Bild ist unübersehbar.)
